Students in Karen Douet’s English III Honors class created a visual representation of the mental illness portrayed in either The Fall of the House of Usher or The Yellow Wallpaper. In their projects, the students explored the connection between that illness and the denial or overindulgence in quintessentially American values like freedom and independence. #sjabr #stickerpride #SJAEnglish

St. Joseph’s Academy hosted

St. Joseph’s Academy hosted its first Student Forum on November 16. Approximately 40 students gathered in the chapel after school to discuss if citizens are justified in protesting against racial injustice in American by kneeling during the National Anthem. Following established forum ground rules, students were invited to express their feelings and beliefs within a two-minute time frame. Audience members were then allowed to ask questions for one minute. “SJA’s inaugural forum allowed us to discuss a difficult issue in a productive way,” said Principal Stacia Andricain. “We came together to celebrate our differences of opinion and find a way to fully understand and appreciate each other’s opinions.” #sjabr #stickerpride #SJAstudentforum

Following their study of DNA and gene technology, students in Lori Harper and Shelly O’Dowd’s biology classes enjoyed a presentation from three experts in the field. Cpl. Connie Kersh of the Baton Rouge Police Department spoke about documenting, preserving and collecting evidence from a crime scene. Erica Sparacino, forensic DNA supervisor at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab, talked about what happens to evidence after it’s sent to the forensics lab. Michelle Lacoste, assistant district attorney and senior felony assistant, described how she works with law enforcement and the crime lab to successfully prosecute cases.
