Good Friday Morning!
Let's talk odor...
"Dogs have a very keen sense of smell, which some experts estimate is anywhere from 40 times to 100,000 times more sensitive than the human sense of smell. People have approximately 5 million odor receptors in their dose, but dogs have a whopping estimated 220 million." In relation to food, when we order a hamburger or slice of pizza what do we smell? We smell the whole recipe of the final product. Did you know that a dog's nose smells it differently? A dog's nose has the ability to separate each ingredient, for instance in a hamburger, a dog's nose can smell the pickles, onions, cheese, beef, lettuce etc and the pizza, cheese, pepperoni, sauce, crust and don't forget the seasoning.
It's important to understand how odor works and is seen through a dog's nose for you to advance in detection training.
If you ever get a chance to sit in on one of Dr David Natty Adebimpe's lecture on odor I highly urge you to do so.
