Climbing is a sport of paradoxes. Itâs about preparation but also luck, about trying hard but also staying calm, about making it happen but also letting it happen. Our reaction to success and failure is just as variable. Most instances of sending a new grade are followed by excitement and joy. This time it was different. When I let go, stopped caring, cleared my mind and finally clipped the chains on my first 5.12c the feeling was relief more than happiness. And yet there is a certain satisfaction in this reaction. The send wasnât as special in part because I feel close to bigger things than I ever have before when pushing into a new grade. So, time to get to work on those bigger things!
