When the original Aborigines arrived at Australia, what the encountered was an alien world. Many of the animals living there were so strange that they made Australia's modern animals look normal. There was #Genyornis, an ancient duck relative taller than a man. No one knows what it ate though, but it was aptly named the Demon Duck of Doom. The herbivores consisted of Procoptodon, a 500-pound kangaroo; #Meiolania, a spiky tortoise that was bigger than many modern tortoises; and even that one is call #ramarak is looks huge at day! and Diprotodon, a two-ton wombat relative and the biggest marsupial ever. These animals lived in fear of two major predators before the humans arrived. One was the dreaded Marsupial Lion, which was a carnivorous relative of the wombat climbing trees and attacking prey from above. However, it was second fiddle to #Megalania, the biggest lizard that ever lived. Like a giant Komodo dragon, the Great Ripper prowled the jungles and savannah for large game, delivering fatal bites and eating without fear of competition. That changed when the humans appeared. Their use of fire destroyed most of the forests, leaving many of the megafauna like #Procoptodon and #Diprotodon exposed and starving, and they vanished. Without their prey and the forests, their predators, Megalania and the #MarsupialLion, would also disappear...

“Shadows of the Procoptodon

“Shadows of the Procoptodon” It’s been a little while since I posted a kangaroo silhouette and as usual it’s another big buck, the smaller one in the background is likely to be one of his many offspring. When I’m observing native animals in a calming setting like this, I often find myself day dreaming of their ancient ancestors. Such as the giant short-faced kangaroo named “Procoptodon goliah” that grew 2–3 metres (7–10 feet) tall, and weighed 200-250kg (440-550 lbs). It’s hard to fathom the scale of the Megafauna that roamed Australia up until approximately 50,000 years ago. There was a giant wombat (Diprotodon) was 3m long and 2m high weighing up to 2,780 kg, a goanna (Varanus) that might have grown to as long as 7m and weighing up to 1,940 kg, a 5–6m long snake (Wonambi naracoortensis) and at least 42 species of other monsters. Much of the megafuna went extinct around the same time as the arrival of the first humans to Australia. It is still debated whether humans or climate change were to blame for their extinction. One thing is now for certain; Aboriginals and megafuna coexisted. This was proven last year when a bloke got out of a car for a dunny break about 550 kilometres north of Adelaide. He stumbled upon a rocky shelter containing archaeological evidence of Aboriginal Australian settlement 49,000 years ago — some 10,000 years earlier than previously thought. The artefacts included 200 bone fragments including remains of Diprotodon and a giant bird, evidence that the early aboriginals hunted megafauna. This year new research by Griffith University in Brisbane found megafauna fossils that dated only 33,000 years ago, proving megafauna and Aboriginals coexisted for at least 17,000 years. What will they find next? Only time will tell.
