Today marks the end of my 15+ year battle to get out of retail and hopefully for good. I've received no shortage of well wishes and support from my peers which I am humbled by and thankful for. However one recurring item has made its way into an otherwise well-meaning phrase, "Congrats on your first grownup job!" My biggest takeaway from all those years I put in at an industry that I wasn't crazy about is that there is no such thing as a "grownup job". What is "grown up" is to labor your hours away to put food on the table by any means necessary. The hourly wage person working the kitchen at McDonald's, the cashier at Wal-Mart, or the barista at the local coffee shop are all every bit as mature as the person who gets full-time salary with benefits, paid vacation, a decent 401k, and whatever arbitrary bar we're measuring "skill sets" from.
That said, I'm glad to be done because holy shit my experience with human interaction is soured from this last gig and that's something I'd like to fix. I eagerly look forward to what awaits me tomorrow.
