You've most likely used a #PostIt note before; that slightly sticky piece of paper that you scribble on, write reminders on, or doodle with, but do you know it came as a result of corporate intrapreneurship? The product is made by #3M and they were one of the earliest companies to realise the value in encouraging employee creativity by allowing them spend 15% of their work time on personal projects. .
3M scientist, Spencer Silver had been working on an adhesive but the end result wasn't as sticky as he had expected. He couldn't imagine how that product would be of any use and didn't pursue work on it until 5 years later when another colleague, Art Frey, realised that he could use the slightly sticky adhesive on paper to mark the pages of books he was reading. This birthed the Post- It note as we know it and the organisation developed a marketing campaign around it which helped it gain popularity within the stationery industry.
NOTE TO REMEMBER: Sometimes your side hustle can be located within your current company. If you have an idea for a product or service that your company can explore then by all means put together a detailed proposal for management's review. Make sure you do a thorough work that answers all potential questions; nothing ventured, nothing gained. The best part of this is that you have the company's resources at your disposal and your risks are shared with the company.
