There is such an overwhelming amount of misinformation on the internet about natural dyeing. One myth I often see is that table salt and vinegar can be used as mordants or 'fixatives' - This is nonsense; as far as I know, neither sodium chloride nor acetic acid work as mordants. I recommend anyone interested in natural dyeing to take a workshop with a respected instructor, and/or invest in some good books on the subject. 'Wild Color' by Jenny Dean is one of my favourites. Look for popular books by well-regarded authors, and steer clear of those published more than 30 years ago, as they often include recipes with substances now known to be carcinogenic (such as chrome). It's awesome that so many people nowadays are experimenting with natural dyeing at home - However, it's best to take things you read on the internet with 'a pinch of salt'.
