Today I went for 1RMs in #benchpress #shoulderpress #deadlift and #squat so it was a big weight day. Only PR was squat (hooray!), but I'm happy with where everything is. Until further notice, my workouts will continue to follow the 7x7, 6x6, 5x5 #circuittraining format I posted last week. Dynamic barbell warmup, including a 1000 meter row before my WOD today. Inspired by @ashley.horner. For my workout I did 6 rounds of movement. Starting with 5 hang cleans at 85lbs, 15 strict sit ups, and rowing to 15 calories... I increased by 1 hang clean, 5 sit ups and 5 calories with each round until hitting 10 cleans, 40 sit ups and 40 calories for a total of 45 cleans, 165 sit-ups/calories. . I love this shirt on @__dina_dominika__ It was interesting to me because my Iyengar teacher frequently reminds us: "STILL the body. Still the mind." In this line of reasoning, movement causes fluctuations in the mind. The purpose of Iyengar yoga is to be still in the pose, and channel our attention & awareness to observe our body in the pose. Which version of the shirt would you wear? 🌬 . . (Note: Ofc I'm aware that Dina and I practise different things. She does martial arts and is great at what she does. I teach yoga asana and come from an Iyengar/hatha background but have sought out other movement modalities, including qigong and tai chi. Due to my shoulder injury, I haven’t really trained much over the past few weeks. Rather than doing nothing, I thought I’d train around it, get back in the gym & get back to bodyweight exercises! I’m a little rusty so forgive me! Here’s a few push-up variations to try, they’re pretty handy because you can do them anywhere without any equipment! - The Spiderman Push-ups are my fav because you get the most bang for your buck. By bringing your knee towards your arm, you’re working your abs & obliques whilst also getting the benefits of a regular push-up. (Plus Spiderman is my 2nd fav Avenger). - Clap Push-ups: the most common plyometric push-up. Good for power & explosiveness as opposed to just body strength. - Shuttle Push-ups: quite an advanced variation that I think is more popular in calisthenics. It’s harder to think about how to do it more than anything! - Side to Side Push-up variations: these are pretty useful as they can help you progress towards doing one-handed push-ups. My boy Garrett getting into a comfy squat position. __________________________________________________ This was after doing 20 minutes of stick mobility spine and hip drills with end range strengthening drills. I did not take a before picture however I will note that when he originally came in his back was hurting and had some sharp pain after deadlifting and squatting a few days ago. The point of of this post is to recognize lack of and/or lazy intent when it comes to mobility and betting movement capacity is important. Bad/lazy intentions+frequency= bad results. Good intention and focus+frequency=great results. I'll be the first to say I am very guilty of getting lazy and slacking. After having him go through each drill with specific intent and focus on each drill and every moment of the drill his back pain was gone. He felt much better, more stable, kept a more upright position (especially when squatting he can sometimes be kyphotic). He was in a better position at the bottom of his squat back much more neutral and kept his positioning well. I informed him to do those same drills 3 to 4 times a week if not more with the same focus he had today. The key point being with the same focus and intent. Do not slack, get lazy, or go through the motions with your movement/mobility training or you'll just go backwards. That's all for today folks. Stay active!

Reframe the questions - As we approach the end of the year it's very natural to assess your training progress over the last twelve months; with a glance back to where you have come from and the strides forward you might have made. As a movement community that isn't attached to the same goals and numbers of other sports, it can sometimes be difficult to see the needle move and appreciate progress as it unfolds. But don't fixate on those challenges you didn't complete, or the jumps you walked away from. Every one of us faces these moments. And post-training reflections need not illicit a simplistic yes or no response..."did you make it?" or "did you stick it?" Instead why not reframe your idea of progress to encompass the broader questions..."what did you learn?" and "what might you change in the future?" Rather than writing your training off as a bad session or failed attempt, why not choose to seek out the different layers of change that occurred during your practice and move forward with the feedback that your body and/or the environment gave you.
