I love macro lenses and when I tell that to people, most of them respond by saying that they are not interested in macros. I only use them occasionally for that. The reason I love them is that I often hit the minimum focus distance on my lenses and can’t make the composition I have in mind. Most macro lenses focus from infinity to at least 1:2 magnification. That makes them incredible versatile pieces of gear. You don’t have to get really close, but you can. On top of that they are usually top notch image quality, I haven’t discovered a bad macro lens yet and this Canon FD 50/3.5 is no exception. Just make sure you get a real macro lens, not one of those macro zoom lens. That’s just marketing... I can’t think of a zoom lens offering at least 1:2 magnification, do you?
