Repetitive bending/twisting through lengthening & shortening the muscles of the core is one mechanism of injury for the low back. If we train the core this way, injury in the low back may occur before we see any substantial gains in the core. . . . The bird-dog is an example of a safe exercise that trains the back extensor muscles. A common mistake is hip hiking which is equivalent to twisting the spine. Benefits come from maintaining a neutral spine with a core brace while movement comes from the shoulders & hips. Hitting 97.5kg’s for 3 sets of 7 reps in the melbourne heat. This safety-bar squat variation has been doing wonders in strengthening my glute meds (the muscle I tore 5 months ago). To do this stuff pain-free is a blessing. Well, not really. I fucken dreaded doing 100 reps of clams, planks, hip thrusts, etc... every day and not being able to squat and deadlift for 16 weeks. It was like the rehab was the mini-bosses you fight before you get to fight the main bosses (Bench, Squat, Deadlift. The big 3!) in a video game. However, as Dr. Stuart McGill who is the spine/lower back Guru says: “The gift of injury is forced discipline.” Fucken #truth

Been too long since I posted a link to a research article. For those who aren't interested in my commentary below I'll post a link in the comments below. Disc adaptation to load and exercise has been a contentious topic. When I was a student of McGill's there was very little research on how discs adapt. As such there's a ton of debate out there regarding appropriate loads, movements and postures to optimize back health. I hope that in the coming years this grey, vague area clears up. An interesting note about this study is that people who were more active had lower bone densities. That's because the participants often only did aerobic exercise which doesn't affect bone density that much. Research has actually shown that swimmers and cyclists have lower bone densities than controls. Its important that both patients, rehab and fitness professionals, and the general public know the amount of people who DON'T have pain but have disc bulges, arthritis and partially torn muscles.
