Racism is at the heart of tribalism and protecting a particular resource. The point of leaders is to explain how inclusion will help our resource centric communities. If you live in West Virginia and you come from coal miners, and that has been the sole provider of your station in life, you are trusting your leaders to look out for you. Rather than telling you that coal will not be an opportunity for you, they need to start training you, slowly and surely, towards a new economic future. Saying that we need to protect coal, that that’s the only way – that’s an easy win. And it makes anything new seem like the enemy.
