Multiple times per week I see comments about “equipment fixation.” I wanted to address why equipment training is necessary for building a balanced dog that is going to be a civil working dog (LEO, PP, MWD). These dogs do not, and should not be bypassing a stage in training where they are equipment based. This stage is a healthy part of the foundation that builds proper biting and grip techniques, and it keeps you and your working dog safe. It also helps find out in a safe manner how much pressure the dog can take. If you think “real dogs” should not have a stage where they are not equipment based, you have no business training working dogs. Skipping equipment and “bringing the fight to the man” is only building an unbalanced dog, and creating conflict with people. Switching a dog from more equipment based training to civil work depends purely on both the mental and physical maturity of a dog. Training and going through the appropriate stages of training with a working dog is necessary no matter what genetic advantage you think your dog may have. Video from @carlosramirezk9.
